Two thirds of the channel-letter decisions we help customers work through at Crisp Signs LLC come down to the same fork in the road: front-lit or halo-lit?
Both are illuminated channel letters. Both use LED modules. Both are UL-listable and code-compliant. But they produce completely different looks, cost different amounts, and work better in different situations.
Here's how to pick.
The 10-second version
- Front-lit = the face of the letter glows. Maximum readability. Standard workhorse. Best for high-traffic retail, restaurants, and any business that lives or dies by drive-by visibility.
- Halo-lit (also called reverse channel or backlit) = the light escapes from behind the letter and reflects off the wall, creating a glowing outline around the silhouette. Premium look. Best for architectural buildings, hospitality, professional services, and brands that want to signal "quality" over "attention."
If you sell to families in a suburban strip mall, you probably want front-lit. If you're a boutique hotel, a law firm, or a restaurant with an architectural facade you want to show off, you probably want halo-lit.
Now the details.
How front-lit channel letters work
The letter is a hollow aluminum "can" with an acrylic face. LEDs sit inside the can and shine through the face. When lit, the entire face glows in the color of the trim cap and acrylic (usually white, red, blue, or brand-color).
Anatomy:
- Face: 3/16" acrylic in your chosen color
- Trim cap: the plastic edge that seals the face to the aluminum return
- Return: the sides of the letter (0.040" aluminum)
- Back: aluminum sheet
- LEDs: modules mounted to the back, shining forward through the face
- Power: low-voltage DC from a UL-listed remote power supply

Why customers pick it:
- Highest readability at distance and in daylight
- Widest range of face colors — brand-match is easy
- Lowest cost per letter of the illuminated options
- Faster to fabricate and install
- Works well on any wall color
Where it can go wrong:
- Cheap acrylic yellows in UV light within 3–5 years — insist on 3/16" UV-stabilized acrylic
- Hot spots (bright dots where LEDs sit closer to the face) if the letter interior isn't lined properly or if LEDs are spaced wrong
- Boring on premium architecture — the "flat glow" can feel plasticky against natural stone, brick, or metal facades
How halo-lit channel letters work
The letter is an aluminum can with a solid aluminum face (usually painted or brushed). The letter mounts about 1–2 inches off the wall on standoffs. LEDs sit inside the can, shining backward onto the wall. The wall becomes the light source. From the street, you see the dark letter shape wrapped in a glowing halo.
Anatomy:
- Face: solid painted or brushed aluminum (no acrylic)
- Return: aluminum
- Back: open, or with acrylic diffuser to soften the light
- Standoffs: 1–2" spacers that hold the letter off the wall so light can escape
- LEDs: mounted to the back, shining onto the wall
- Power: low-voltage DC from a UL-listed remote power supply
Why customers pick it:
- Premium, architectural, expensive-looking result
- Works exceptionally well against textured surfaces (brick, stone, brushed metal)
- The letter reads well unlit during the day because the face is solid
- Softer, more sophisticated glow — good for hospitality and professional services
- Photographs beautifully at dusk
Where it can go wrong:
- The wall matters. Halo-lit signs need a wall that's light-colored, relatively smooth, and matte to bounce light evenly. On a dark, glossy, or heavily textured wall, the halo effect gets muddy.
- Standoffs must be precise. Any less than about ¾" and the halo is too tight; more than about 2" and light spills sideways and looks messy.
- Higher fabrication complexity means higher cost — typically 15–25% more than front-lit for the same letter size.
- Slightly harder to read at distance — the eye picks up the glow before it registers the shape.
Cost difference (real numbers)
For a typical 24-inch letter, 10-character sign, direct wall mount:
- Front-lit: $5,500 – $8,000 installed
- Halo-lit: $6,500 – $9,500 installed
- Dual-lit (front + halo): $8,500 – $13,000 installed
The cost delta is bigger than most owners expect because halo-lit fabrication involves:
- More precise back-of-letter engineering (the light distribution matters)
- Standoff hardware and layout
- More LED modules (halos need more light because the wall absorbs some)
- More install time (each letter has to sit off the wall at exactly the right depth)
When to pick which
Pick front-lit if:
- You're a retail store, restaurant, service business, or any storefront in a competitive area where drive-by visibility drives revenue
- Your wall color clashes with your brand and you need the letters themselves to carry the color
- You want the widest range of color and face-effect options (translucent color, tinted acrylic, printed graphics)
- Your budget is the primary constraint
- You want the sign to look "on" from a distance in bright daylight, not just at night
Pick halo-lit if:
- You're a hotel, restaurant, professional services firm, boutique, gym, or brand where perceived quality matters more than raw readability
- Your building has an architectural facade (brick, stone, wood, metal panel) that deserves to be showcased, not covered
- You want a sign that looks great unlit during the day (halo-lit reads as clean dimensional letters when off)
- You're on a light-colored, smooth-textured wall
- You have budget headroom for the premium
Pick dual-lit if:
- You're a premium brand in a competitive location
- You want both maximum daytime readability and premium nighttime aesthetic
- The building deserves it and the budget supports it
What about the wall behind the sign?
This is the question halo-lit customers should ask before committing:
- Color. Light warm neutrals (cream, white, light gray, tan brick) bounce halo light beautifully. Dark walls (charcoal, dark brick, black metal) kill the effect — you'll see the halo, but it's dim and muddy.
- Texture. Smooth or lightly textured surfaces (stucco, painted drywall, smooth brick) produce clean halos. Heavily textured surfaces (rough stone, split-face block, corrugated metal) scatter light and make the halo look uneven.
- Finish. Matte or eggshell reflects halo light diffusely — good. Glossy walls reflect light specularly — bad, you'll see hot spots.
If your wall is dark, glossy, or rough, ask about a backer panel — a smooth aluminum panel painted a halo-friendly color, mounted first, letters mounted second. It adds cost, but it saves the effect.
What about outdoor conditions?
Both types are code-compliant for exterior use when built properly. But if you're in a coastal environment — Myrtle Beach, Charleston, anywhere with salt air — insist on:
- 0.040" or heavier aluminum returns (thinner gauges corrode faster)
- Gasketed weatherproof power supply enclosures
- UL-listed wet-location LEDs (not just UL, wet-location UL)

Common misconceptions
"Halo-lit is cheaper because there's no acrylic face." No. Halo-lit is more expensive because the fabrication is more precise, more LEDs are needed to overcome wall absorption, and install labor is higher.
"Front-lit signs are old-fashioned." No. Front-lit is the standard because it's the most effective sign type for most businesses. "Old-fashioned" is unlit dimensional letters and box signs — front-lit channel letters are still the industry workhorse for a reason.
"I need my logo colors to glow — halo-lit won't work." Correct. If color-glow is a brand requirement, front-lit is the way. Halo-lit gives you a colored halo (whatever color the LEDs are, typically white or warm white) around a dark silhouette. If you're a red brand, your customers see a red halo — not a red logo.
"Halo-lit is more energy-efficient." Not really. Modern LEDs are efficient either way. Halo-lit uses more LED modules per letter because more light is absorbed by the wall, so total wattage is comparable.
The bottom line
For 70% of storefronts, front-lit is the right answer. It's the sign type that actually converts drive-by traffic into foot traffic, and it works on almost any building.
For 20% of customers — premium brands, architectural buildings, or businesses where "we're the classy one" is the positioning — halo-lit is the right answer.
For the remaining 10% — flagship locations where the sign is part of the brand identity — dual-lit justifies the cost.
